Who doesn't love a fall getaway to New York? Fabulous museums and theatre, chic restaurants and walking the endlessly fascinating city streets. But what to pack? Jen just got back from a weekend in the city and we took a peek into her suitcase to find out what she brought. Pieces profiled on the blog today are what she actually packed, or similar if not currently available.
Outfit of the day: walking around the city
The ankle length velvet jeans above by 6397 are a great alternative to standard denim. They're comfortable and easy to wear. Pair them with an oversized white cotton shirt like the one pictured from Topshop, and a knit high-top sneaker like the one above from Michael Kors. As a pricier alternative, check out these Balenciagas. [Two quick notes: the Topshop piece is only available in sizes 2 and 6; because it is oversized, the 2 will fit sizes 2-4 and the 6 will fit 6-8. And, if you live in the DC area, the 6397 jeans are available locally at Relish (www.relishdc.com) in the store or via phone order. Keep in mind the return policy if you order via phone (7 days, store credit only).]
Outfit of the day: going to the theatre
The duster above from Dries van Noten is a total game changer. You wear it like a long blazer or a light coat. It transforms any basic monochromatic outfit. It's a true investment piece with a price tag to match. Here is an alternative piece from Zara you can wear similarly, but at a lower price point. The black silk button down from Rag & Bone looks great under the duster and is an essential basic for any closet. Jen wore this exact top with the ankle length Mother jeans and a great pair of black boots similar to the Rag & Bone pair pictured above.
Outfit of the day: off to the museums
The best strategy for packing for a weekend is to have versatile pieces that you use multiple times like the Mother jeans and Michael Kors shoe above. This time Jen paired them with a oversized black cashmere sweater by Vince. A cozy daytime look in all black.
Outfit of the day: going out to dinner
Reuse the black silk Rag & Bone shirt and the black boots, but pair them with a beautiful silk wide-leg pant like these from Joseph. Tuck the shirt in and pair with the coat and scarf shown below on a chillier night.
With a beautiful easy lightweight wool Dries van Noten scarf like this in your bag, you can add a little extra flair to your basics. The fabric and pattern make it well worth the price and it goes with our walking around the city and going out to dinner outfits.
Here's a great, affordable wool coat by Cos. Jen threw it on over any of the outfits when it was chilly outside.
This is a great day to evening bag and is all you need for a weekend away. Made by Shinola, the crossbody is perfect for walking around and you can tuck it under your arm at night.
To top it all off, pack one beautiful necklace that works for day and night. The one pictured by Brunello Cucinelli is a showstopper and something you'll have forever. An alternative from J. Crew that's less expensive can be found here. Either would work beautifully with our walking around the city or going out to dinner outfits.
