In the bag

"It" bags continue to have their moment. But for most of us, the true prize is finding a bag that just works. Function, beauty and quality are far more important than any label or logo. Here are some of our favorites from this season.

This is Jen's favorite type of bag. It looks chic and leaves your hands free, brilliantly combining a sophisticated look with a practical purpose.

We love this dusty rose crossbody from Rag & Bone. The color looks amazing paired with neutrals like navy, black, charcoal and white.

Parker Clay is a terrific resource for bags. Founded by two Californians, its production is based in Ethiopia. The leather is sourced locally and ethically and the company employs vulnerable, at-risk women as artisans. Even better, the leather is thick and gorgeous and the bags are modern and stylish. This crossbody is a great example. Perfect for everyday or for travel, it fits easily into a larger tote bag.

Cos makes this fabulous, practical crossbody out of a beautiful buttery leather. It's a super practical, two-bags-in-one. The navy and black combo is genius.

Another one by Cos. We chose it because of the beautiful grey suede and its perfect size. It's not bulky but it can fit a lot more than a credit card and a phone.

Everyone needs a tote. Whether you're carrying a laptop or a set of diapers, you can't get away without one in your life.

We love this one by Rag & Bone. It's oversized in a good way and the contrasting straps give it a little extra flare. Inside is a zip pocket and a sporty bungee cord key ring.

This Clare V tote is a little more traditional in style. The combination of neutral tones means it goes with just about anything. Its sturdy flat bottom and strap keep it practical.

Another great piece by Parker Clay. The leather in this tote is ridiculously thick and sturdy. With the full zip top, it's ideal for traveling and everyday use.

Shinola is a terrific leather maker. This hobo is fantastic and slouchy and spacious and made of a beautiful black suede. The high-end designer The Row has been making a similar one for years and it never goes out of style.

This bag by Staud is another two-in-one. It comes with a coordinating removable pouch in white. It has a shoulder strap (not pictured) and a convenient top handle.

Belt bags

A bit of a trend this year, these are not your mother's fanny packs. Wear them around your waist or as a more fitted crossbody bag.

This belt bag from Cos is done in a great winter white and would look amazing with any dark neutral outfit. It has a slim profile and can be worn year round.

A.P.C.'s mini belt bag is another good choice. In black, with its streamlined shape, it's one of the easiest and most subtle ways to hop onto the trend.

Everyone needs a clutch for going out at night or organizing essentials in a tote.

This Parker Clay is the only one we've posted because it's the only one you need. It can be worn folded and tucked under your arm, or open and carried by its handy gold rings. Buy it or regret it.
