In transition

Fall clothes are in stores now and there's a lot to be excited about. Today, we've picked some of our favorite items for the transition season. Each piece is something you can wear for months (and years) to come.

Here we have the boot of the season (and it's comfortable!): the lug sole Chelsea boot. This version by See by Chloe happens to be well priced and the brown accents at the heel and sole are good differentiators.

Sacai is a brand we re-introduced on our post on dresses last week. The white shirt on the left is another great example of the brand's aesthetic - the high-low hem, the grosgrain ribbon placket, the sharp shoulder and collar and the thick cotton fabric. There's really no one who doesn't need this in her closet. We think it's a slam dunk. It also comes in a short-sleeved version here.

On the right is a classic black shirt by Nili Lotan, the master of shirting. In lightweight cotton, this shirt is a little more cropped, which makes it cute half-tucked. It's really a great example of a stepped up basic.

Loulou Studio makes this beautiful cream cable knit sweater. This modern, well-cut and well-priced version of the classic Irish Aran represents quintessential fall coziness. Try it with a white button down or denim shirt underneath and a boot cut jean or trouser pant.

Jen just got this Joseph sweater in deep navy and is obsessed. It's an interesting piece over anything - even your workout clothes. It's a that-much-better version of a poncho. Wear it with a monochrome look underneath - all denim, navy or black. You want to offset the fluid shape of the sweater with a slimmer silhouette underneath. Note: it runs big, so size down one whole size.

Cos makes this interesting accessory piece - they call it a cardigan, but it's just sleeves and a back, sort of like a shrug. It's the type of piece you don't think you need, but will wear all the time. Throw it on over a T shirt or a tank dress and go.

It's not fall if we're not thinking about denim. We've rounded up three favorites in some silhouettes you may not already have in your arsenal. From left to right. 1. The G. Label high-waisted painter pant. This would be perfect with the See by Chloe boot above. Most likely different from the other 99 pairs of jeans in your closet. 2. The G. Label boot cut. The boot cut is back and better than ever. It's a great, sophisticated silhouette. Be warned: this version has no stretch. If you have a narrow waist, go for it. 3. The Mother cropped step-fray. This one has the perfect amount of stretch (i.e., a lot) and not too much fade; you can almost size down. This style is a must-own.

Lightweight jackets are the key to fall dressing and here are two good ones. On top, the Sacai vest is super cute and a good price for this brand. It's a modern take on the vest with a pleated back and big zipper. It's great for transition weather as an extra layer. Another perfect piece to throw on over your workout clothes.

The second piece is a hooded parka by Cos. It's cotton, so it's a perfect fall piece, not a winter jacket. And a great shape! This is not for the dead of winter but great for the buffer seasons. The waist tie gives you flexibility to cinch it in if you want.

By now, you know we love a belt bag. They somehow seem even more practical during a pandemic. This version by Cos is very good. The emphasis here is on both the belt and the bag. The bag can be removed and used as a clutch and the belt is chic alone. So versatile! Love this over a trench as shown above. It's a clutch and a belt and only $99.
