On top

From basic-not-basic tees to a very special, embellished, sleeveless sweater, here's our collection of the tops that will see you through spring straight into summer. As always, we like our basics to be high quality and cut just right and our special pieces, well, special.

At left, Madewell makes this (very, very) inexpensive but well-cut sleeveless tee shirt. A little longer in the back and not overly fitted, you can afford an armful of these in black and white. At right, Rag & Bone's crewneck tee is made in a really nice cotton with the perfect, tiny sleeve that's flattering on the arm. It comes in many colors. Black and white here. Red here. Grey here.

As we shift away from skinny jeans to more modern silhouettes (think high-waisted, wider leg), the question is what top to wear? This piece by Isabel Marant Etoile, in a flattering deep red, is one excellent answer. It looks beautiful tucked in as shown with a high waisted pant or short. Consider a strapless bra here since this top has a racerback.

This Nili Lotan cotton top evokes summer breezes and the best warm weather days. It will be super cute with white pants, jeans or a cute pair of shorts. And we would love it with a denim blazer on top. The paisley print is a nod to preppy without going to Lilly Pulitizer land. Style tip: this top is best on the smaller/medium chested.

Veronica Beard makes this top and it's even cuter in real life. The melange effect is flattering on a lot of skin tones. It's a more special version of a basic tee shirt and we love the gathered shoulder detail.

Finally, for the piece de resistance, check out this gorgeous, special sweater by Simone Rocha. It's a chunky, hand knit with a very pretty cap sleeve. The navy paired with the black embellishment is timeless and so chic. Wear it with jeans or black pants. It also comes in cream.
