Spring mix and match

One of the best parts of working with a stylist is leaving a store with a set of pieces that all work together. The key is to start with a foundation of elevated basics that you can build on. Our picks below from the new spring collections are that foundation - and they all work together.

Pants and Tops

Clockwise from top left: 1. Frame black one-shoulder top; 2. Tibi metallic pants; 3. Co navy tunic; 4. J.Crew black pant; 5. James Perse white tank (now sold out - similar by RE/DONE here - wear with a strapless bra); 6. Lee Mathews white top; 7. Cos navy culottes.

First, let's talk about the fun metallic spring dress pants by Tibi. They are so great! Think about metallic as a neutral that goes with anything. The pants are pleated, so they work best if you're slimmer in the waist.

The navy culottes by Cos are made from a soft jersey stretch fabric. Perfect for kicking around on weekends during warm weather. Throw on a tank and sneaker and go. For $49 you can't go wrong.

And the J. Crew crop pants are great for dressing up or down. Wear to the office with a silk top or on the weekend with a tank and platform sandal like this one from Pedro Garcia. These J. Crew pants are similar, but lower priced, than the Vince pants that we profiled last week.

We love the white short sleeve top by Lee Mathews. It's a great shirt for everyday in the spring and summer but has a little something special about it. Put this with the navy culotte half-tucked and with the black pant left loose.

The black tank top by Frame is a great piece. Jen doesn't usually love a cold shoulder, but this is a modern alternative that leans in that direction without going too far. It goes with all three pants brilliantly.

The white tank by James Perse is the definition of an elevated basic. It's more luxurious feeling than your typical jersey or cotton tank and goes with all three pants. It also layers brilliantly under any blazer.

What we love about the navy tunic by Co is that you can wear it straight or with its self fabric belt. Belt it over the culotte or wear it either way over the black J. Crew pant. On hotter days, wear it as a dress with a Pedro Garcia platform sandal or the crisp white sneaker below.

Two jackets

Everyone needs a great jean jacket. Jen loves to have her clients wear a jean jacket like a shirt: buttoned up, collar up, sleeves rolled. This one by J. Crew is perfect and can be worn with all of the pants above or the dresses below.

The Cos poncho is filled with great details and the light grey color is lovely. It's a great spring lightweight coat. Wear it over everything in this post. Like all of the best Cos pieces, you get a very modern look here for a reasonable price.

A couple of great dresses

Thierry Colson makes the striped dress on the right. It's literally the perfect spring dress with its long sleeves and great length. As an added bonus it has pockets! It would look great with the sleeves rolled up and a few buttons undone up top.

The dress on the left by Cos leans a bit more into summer. It can be worn two different ways: loose or buttoned to the side, giving it a wrap effect. And it has pockets, too! Leave two or three buttons undone at the top. Wear it with a sneaker, sandal or over a bathing suit. Put it over sleek black pants and go to dinner. Throw the jean jacket over it on a cool evening. The possibilities are endless for $125.

And finally, a couple of chic accessories

This navy Parker Clay hobo bag is amazing and a great accessory for spring. The color is gorgeous in real life. Get it treated so the color doesn't rub off onto your clothes. The price for the quality is unbeatable.

As we move into spring, here's a great sandal to get you in the mood. These are by M. Gemi and look like they could be by Marni. They have all the quality and style of a high end designer without the price tag. They are beautiful in grey but also come in black.

And everyone needs a crisp white sneaker. These ones by Cos are sleek and modern.
