The skinny on jeans

We're betting your closet is filled with skinny jeans in all of their different/not so different iterations. [We define a skinny jean as one that is tight to your body from waist to ankle.] If so, it's time to introduce some new silhouettes into your jean regime. The great news is that there are a ton of choices out there to change it up. The bad news is that it can be hard to navigate them all. To make it easier, we've pulled together a great selection of what's out there by different designers in varying shapes, washes, colors and hems.

Khaite is a bit of a sleeper brand. The price point is a little higher but the design is top-notch with close attention paid to little details. The jean above is an example of a wide-leg option that's still fitted around the waist and rear. It has the effect of creating a very long leg, particularly if worn with a heel, but could be great with a flat if you're taller. This pair would work well for people who are more narrow through the waist and hip because the fabric doesn't have any stretch.

This is a great jean from J. Crew. It's high-waisted and stretchy and is flattering on most body types. We love the exposed button fly, especially when you tuck in your top, and the cool cut-off hem makes it easy to wear with any type of shoe. The dark wash is slimming and even more so paired with a navy top like the one shown. As of this posting, J. Crew is offering 25% off the jeans and 40% off the top with their discount code (displayed on their site).

The color of these Mother jeans is fantastic. They call it faded black but it's a sophisticated charcoal gray, the most versatile color in the world next to navy. These are super stretchy and flattering and great on all body types. Cut the longest strings from the bottom for a cleaner look. The hemline shows shoes to their advantage, especially a bootie - don't be afraid to show a little ankle. Great with a flat or heel as well.

Don't be afraid of the crossover waist on these R13 boyfriend jeans. It doesn't create the dreaded drop crotch - instead, it creates the appearance of a flat waist on what is otherwise a slouchy boyfriend look. This pant is the priciest of our picks but that's because it's interesting and different. Not everyone else will have it this season.

We love the washed red color of these high-waisted, stretchy RE/DONE jeans. They have a slim fit with a little flare and interesting hem. They will hit most people at the ankle and be a little more cropped on those 5'8" and taller, as in the photo. We love pairing this one with neutral tops - black, navy, charcoal, white and cream.

These are a dressier, straight jean from J. Crew that are an easy one step away from the skinny. They have a little stretch and a higher waist and a little more room in the leg. These would be a nice alternative to a black pant for a night out. Pair them with a blazer and tee, a button down shirt tucked in or a cute dark sweater (navy, black). As of this posting, J. Crew is offering 25% off with their discount code (displayed on site).

These Mother jeans are another terrific wide-leg option. They're high-waisted and, in contrast to the Khaite jeans, stretchy, and therefore flattering to more body types. If you're under 5'7", wear these with a heel or platform shoe for a lengthening look. If you're taller, you can wear them with any shoe. We love these with a half or full tuck on top or a more cropped sweater.

One last pair from Mother. This is probably the easiest jean to wear of the bunch. High-waisted and stretchy, fitted through the thigh with a boot cut on bottom, they flatter just about everyone. With the faded wash, these feel super casual. Wear with a flat, heel or bootie.
