Two black skirts and how to wear them

A black skirt is a versatile and valuable piece to have on hand. You can wear one for so many occasions, from the office to a party to running around town. We're profiling two very different options today with recommendations on how to wear each in the most flattering ways.

A pencil skirt is one of the most attractive silhouettes regardless of one's body type and the Mother denim skirt on the left is a great example. This one is stretchy, forgiving and a perfect length. It's super versatile and can be worn with a shoe boot (ideal if you're shorter), platform sneaker or a high boot. [At the moment, it's only available in sizes 23 through 27, but it's likely to be back in stock in other sizes soon. You can enter your email on the Mother site to be notified when that happens.]

The Moncler pleated skirt on the right is a bit dressier and can be worn year-round. It also happens to have a comfortable elastic waist. It's perfect for people with a flat midsection and fairly narrow frame (if in doubt, try it on and make sure the pleats sit straight). Wear with a shoe boot or high boot.

We've picked our favorite pieces to pair with both below.

With the Mother denim skirt

This Ulla Johnson cotton puff sleeve top is a nod to the sweatshirt trend without being sloppy. It looks best with the sleeves pushed up. It comes in a variety of colors but we like the blanc.

This short-sleeved cashmere sweater from Ann Mashburn has a banded waist so it sits neatly and there's no need to tuck it in. The navy will look great with the black denim and the v-neckline is flattering to all. It's perfect for the transition from summer to fall.

With the Moncler pleated skirt

A bodysuit is a smart choice with the pleated skirt as it creates a clean, straight line. This one by Wolford is made of a beautiful quality fabric and with proper care (i.e., hand washing) will last for ages. The white provides an interesting contrast but it also comes in black if you want a mono-chromatic and even sleeker look.

With either skirt

Ann Mashburn makes a classic cut silk shirt that is simple and beautiful. Leopard is a trend this fall (and almost every fall) and this shirt is a chic way to incorporate it into your wardrobe without going overboard. It will look great tucked into either the denim or pleated skirt and you'll find that it works under a black blazer or layered under a traditional black crewneck sweater as well.

J. Crew's cute, inexpensive sweater also would also be great with either skirt. You can tuck or half-tuck the ribbed waist into the denim skirt or blouse it up a little with the pleated one. Also, don't forget the two J. Crew denim shirts in blue and black that we profiled earlier this month. Either one could be paired with either black skirt - tuck them in or tie them at the waist.

These Rag and Bone black shoe boots would also be terrific with either skirt. They're flattering because they're low-cut and hit right at the ankle, lengthening your leg. They also happen to be comfortable. The boots run true to size and are deeply discounted at the moment (note: they are final sale). Another great choice from Rag and Bone would be the white shoe boots profiled earlier and found here.
