Weekend uniform part two

In part one of our weekend uniform series, we wrote about how throwing on a great coat and shoe can take casual basics to the next level. Today's post is all about the high quality basics that look good under that great coat - or all on their own. Questions about how to mix and match the pieces from the two-part "weekend uniform" series? Ask them in the comments section below and we'll reply.

Flannel shirts are easy this time of year - cozy and comfortable. But you don't want to look like a lumberjack. The Madewell option on the left is a tunic length so it looks great over leggings or straight leg jeans. The R13 on the right is a little funkier with its frayed asymmetric hem. Wear it with a higher-waisted jean. It could also be fun as a little jacket, left unbuttoned with a t-shirt. Both are terrific choices for running errands, sitting on the sidelines or throwing on over workout clothes.

These two shirts are a step up for casual weekend wear. You can pair either with any of the jeans or the cotton velvet pants profiled below. The Nili Lotan piece on the left is a cut above your average plaid top with its gathered puff sleeve and fine cotton material. Wear it unbuttoned at the top. The Alex Mill on the right is similar to last week's striped piece. It's an easy silhouette that you can tuck in or leave out and it has a lovely gathered back. These tops will take you to brunch or a matinee or an afternoon at a museum.

Sweatshirts are having a moment and that's awesome. But no one wants to look like they've given up. These two options have a more modern cut than the standard and a bit of flair in their details. The R13 sweatshirt on the left is oversized with a frayed hem and would be amazing over the leggings below or standard workout clothes. Put a cool jacket over it and wear the hood out. The Rag & Bone option on the right has a nice deep V and can be half tucked or not - a little sleeker than your standard sweatshirt.

James Perse makes really good quality cotton t-shirts like these, which are great for layering or on their own. The one on the left is a more boxy cut and easy to tuck or half-tuck. The one on the right is ribbed and more fitted and has a cool little notched sleeve.

This Mother denim dress is super versatile. We think it would be great on the weekend with a platform sneaker or a bootie.

These two Mother jeans are both great choices with the tops above. The grey one on top is a great color - a little bit different than your average black or blue. Wear these with a bootie that hits a few inches above the ankle. The deep blue pair is higher waisted with a full leg and can be worn with any shoe from a platform sneaker to a boot or a flat.

These Current/Elliott navy cotton velvet pants are a notch up from jeans. Wear them with the shirts above or a cute cropped sweater and a heeled boot.

J. Crew makes these basic inexpensive cotton leggings that are perfect for running around on the weekends with the oversized R13 sweatshirt or the Madewell flannel above. They also happen to be 50% off right now with the code on their site.
