What to wear now

What can I order today and wear this week? It's a tricky question this time of year when stores are filled with down coats and cashmere sweaters but it's still hot outside in most parts of the country. We've pulled together a few great pieces that you can wear today and carry into the fall, worn slightly differently when temperatures cool.

One of the most underestimated types of clothing is the day dress. Day dresses are comfortable, easy, stylish, and a one-stop shop. All you need to add is a shoe. The long-sleeve cotton Cos piece above is a fun, inexpensive choice for the transition to fall. Wear it now with a white platform sneaker or Birkenstock sandal and later with a shoe boot and bare legs. If it's warm, you can roll up the sleeves. Size up in this dress - Cos tends to run small.

Remember the J. Crew denim shirt from the last post that we love, love, love? Good news, it now comes in washed black! Like the blue denim, it goes with just about everything. Wear it the same way you're wearing the blue one, layered or on its own. This is a year-round piece - get it now so you can start enjoying it! This version has a little less give in the fabric, so if you're in between sizes, get the larger one.

This is a really nice, not too fitted, not too loose, basic tee made from super soft cotton by RE/DONE. It's great on its own and will be terrific layered under blazers or sweaters when the weather cools down. The optic white is our pick. It also comes in black.

A black jean is a terrific wardrobe staple and this one from Frame is particularly good. These stretchy, mid-waisted ankle length flares form a silhouette that is universally flattering. Trying a new silhouette is a great way to switch it up (especially if your go-to is a pair of tired-out skinny jeans). If they don't hit at your ankle, hem them.

This navy Cos dress is a really easy piece - comfortable, lightweight, and forgiving. To wear it, you need to be comfortable (or get comfortable) with some volume. You can play with the tie-belt to give it a little more or less structure. It's an interesting and modern look.

J. Crew designed this affordable necklace but it looks like it could be much higher-end. It falls in the right spot on your neck, not too high or low. This light natural color is perfect for now, but it also comes in a walnut color that feels right for fall and winter.

These J.Crew mules are an elevated basic with a great shape. They nod toward fall without crossing over into boot territory. They are a perfect transition shoe. Wear them with the Frame jeans above or the printed Cos dress.
